A collaborative drawing with Mara Lonner. It is at LAX Airport terminal 3 just next to the Virgin America baggage claim.

Crisscross-statement

Inspired by the temporary human and spatial interactions continually taking place at Los Angeles International Airport, Crisscross depicts LAX as an environment that connects one place to another… and another... and another.

By incorporating visual cues from around the airport itself, this art installation renders travel as most of us experience it: a hazy montage of landmarks and sightlines that nudge us along our individual paths. The work is not meant to be deciphered so much as felt and remembered in fragments—like those incongruous yet purposefully interlocking patches of landscape one sees from an airplane window.

About the artists
Mara Lonner and Kim Schoenstadt are Los Angeles–based artists who have participated in numerous national and international exhibitions. Crisscross is their first collaboration. Lonner utilizes a variety of media to intertwine architectural ornaments and botanical forms, examining their geometric similarities. Schoenstadt focuses on drawing, creating projects that often employ architectural shapes that allude to utopian issues. While the two artists' work differs in its execution, they share a common interest in blurring the distinction between the organic and geometric worlds.

A few notes on the process
The collaboration began by the artists walking around the airport and taking photos of things they found interesting. They then researched the history of the airport’s plant life and architecture. The final design combines elements that are only found at this location such as the control towers, lights and a native plant called California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum).
